Wrest Park

I'm almost caught up with some of our old day trip adventures! Back in May, we visited a local English Heritage site named Wrest Park. It's not too far from us; only took about 20-25 minutes to get there. There is a large old manor house, which has had many purposes -- notably, it was a hospital for injured soldiers during WWI. It was also a US ambassador's "vacation" home at one point as well -- pretty nice for a 2nd home!

We happened to visit on a weekend where they were having a special event called "Wrest at War." They were celebrating the role that Wrest Park played in WWI and WWII. We were very surprised at how good the re-enactors were! It was a troupe of men who must travel around doing events; it looked like they even were camped out under some trees for the weekend. We especially enjoyed hearing a detailed demonstration about various aspects of chemical warfare in WWI, as well another demonstration about the process of bringing injured soldiers back from the front. The demonstrators were really fantastic. However, when the soldier was "shot" by a blank from a gun, Charlotte was really startled and cried. Poor thing. We didn't learn our lesson, though, and tried to take her to a battle reenactment at the end of the afternoon. We felt terribly when the grenades started going off and Charlotte was howling in fear. We made a quick escape with a lot of other parents and dog-owners!! Parenting fail. Sorry baby girl. She did love watching the horses!

You could tell these guys were having fun!
Charlotte and I did not attend this portion of the afternoon... too much (fake) gunfire!

Here come the horses!
Yay horses!
